Does he have anything to do with the religion around Christmas? Kaylee mentioned it has religious roots... which might explain how Santa's supposed to be everywhere at once.

Was that when a large part of the ship was turning into the creatures you could catch in those funny looking balls?

That's possible... It does seem like he's called "Saint Nick" sometimes. So, maybe you're right.
